I don’t consider it racist. However, when grown men exhibit their patriotism exclusively through international sports I find it ridiculous and useless. Particularly when a lot of these teams aren’t even made up of genuine Irish people.Cheering on an Ireland side made up of mostly non-Irish players is rather like walking down an Irish “high” street seeing mostly English shops, Premiere League football jerseys, and hearing nothing but English spoken: One gets the feeling there is something fraudulent about the whole endeavor. We are still too much an appendage of England.

I don’t begrudge Irish fans of sport for feeling an increased sense of rivalry when facing an opponent who once colonised their entire country and still holds dominion over the upper northeast portion of it. What i don't like even more is the type of journalist who Irish bashes at every moment. The papers and media are full of Irish bashing and I am sick of it. Your article is jumping from right to left and back again and trying to compare apples a pears. If want to talk about racism talk about it. If you want to talk about xenophobia, which is not the same thing, then discuss that. But if you wish to discuss the fall out of colonialism, don't confuse that with what happened on the island of Ireland in the last 40 years and in other countries that is related to those issues. You look roughly fortyish, so I am guessing you heard of the civil rights movement in the north, I am guessing you heard of such events as Dublin Monaghan bombings, of collusion, of the H blocks, of the hunger strikers, of the right to arrest any person under the prevention of terrorism without cause, for a 7 day period, ( this long before 911 or Al queada), I imagine you heard of the maguire 7, the birmingham 6 , the guildford 4? I guess you know the English papers ran articles during the Falklands war accusing Ireland of betraying them by not supporting the war. Have you ever walked passed the GPO, have you ever read the declaration of independance?
Your article and your accusations and confusions are an insult to both the Irish and English. You are careless in your analogies, and inchorent in your logic. I think it's a great shame that Ireland when it is on it's knees, can only be kicked by it's journos. I have no idea how many Irish people there are on the team, I don't care. We won a match I am pleased, even more pleased due to sporting rivalry that it was England, even more pleased due to my political view , that maybe we have brought attention to ourselves in a positive way , to a country that deals with Irish people on the level of stereotypes. Yes racism is rife in Ireland, but it's not a particularly Irish illness. What I find tedious is the attitude that anything remotely political in Ireland in relation to England has to be 800 of years of history or drunken talk. I understand true Republicanism, I understand my history, and my every day reality. It's a shame a journalist like yourself can't get your terminology right and your facts straight before you start banging on about something. Try talking to some Irish abroad before you decide you know how they are perceived! This is at best lazy journalism, and its journalism of this standard, that has allowed the State to crumble. Allowing the state to crumble is an insult to the memory of many people and an article like this is an insult to many as well.

I don’t like Cricket. For all your ‘intellectual’ remarks and ‘witty’ observations, your first reaction was “West Brits beating the actual Brits at a boring garrison game”!!! Doesn’t sound like the mind of an ‘intelligent’ journalist to me, but a reaction of the very generalizing attitude you’re venting your anger against!!!As an ex-player and friend of the teams I can garuntee you there is no West-Brits or has been in the squad as far as I can remember & if there was so what? Isn’t this the very attitude that is getting under your skin?!Again, your comment (in capitals no doubt) “EVEN THOUGH IT’S ONLY CRICKET” !!
Another genrealizing statement in this country! You may not have an interest in the game or care whether we beat England or Australia or any country for that matter and you have no obligation to, but just as you don’t have an interest in the game or how well the national team does, did you ever consider tha fact that some people may not consider finding 100billion yo yos down the back of the couch or your highly impressive (google search) statistics on Irish tourism and census as very enlightening or important for that matter! We get on with the English , we have no personal gripe if we meet one in the pub most Irish people will have the crack with any nationality. But our history is a separate matter and goes deep, real deep and to dismiss all of it with an attitude of “ah get over it” is naive and shows a lack of culture on your part, actually.. if us Irish didn’t have a pop at the country that raped and pillaged ours for so many years on these such occasions and future ones im sure, THAT would not be normal. Sure, the country will get excited about cricket for a bit and it might die down tomorrow and be gone for another few years and then we’ll no doubt hear the ould chestnut “Ireland have a cricket team ????” jibe again. But these events are what bring a country together in ways someone, as obviously ignorant and childish as you, will never understand.I say to you LIGHTEN UP!! Its not racism, as I said its quite normal to vent our years of oppression in these small but meaningful ways. I know you’d rather walk down Grafton St. holding the Queens hand lookin in Brown Thomas’ window singin’ “God save the queen” but we’re not all like you!Another generalization from our insightful journalist
“The odd thing is that the English don’t get this. They actually LIKE us. The Germans and French are sick of us, but the Brits still want to be friends. They’re even lending us money.”
There you go on about your precious money again and lump the Germans and the French into a big group that are sick of us, no doubt because they have to bail us out! Listen at this stage its quite clear where you stand, You couldnt care less about Irish cricket and you want to wish you were english and RICH!Id like to sum up by saying you’re a complete racist towards cricket and I for one take offence.I can tell you that the general public have NO IDEA how important this victory was to that squad of players and the thousands of people in Ireland who follow the game religiously! And it does represent a turning point in the games history not only here but all over the world. After talkin to Kevin 10 mins after the game was over I felt truly honoured that I knew someone as gifted and ballsy as him to stand up to the might of a nation who, in this particular sport look down on the Irish like pieces of dirt. He has qualities in him that this journalist will NEVER KNOW!Let the country celebrate, EVEN IF IT IS ONLY CRICKET!!! Let them celebrate if its Tiddlywinks who cares? any excuse to change the subject from the boring economy and money!DAVE KENNY WHAT A MUPPETT!

Where to start?!?<br

People like beating their closest peers. That's why local derby games are so big, why Cork v Kerry in football is so important to Cork and Kerry people. Even when you play rugby or soccer for your local club, when you have two teams and you both enter the same competition and you get to play against each other you want to win that game more than anything else.As you say, Irish people are very familiar with English culture, that's why they want to win. Beating the Finnish or the Maltese isn't as interesting because we don't know them.

Dave, it’s not racism or even republicanism. Loved the opening in particular about not knowing a cricket ball in Harolds Boys! However I definitely do not think the fact that yep, we take particular joy in the English being beaten at what is considered their game and when its Ireland that does the beating.... well its just a wee bit sweeter. As many of the comments have reflected, this is not racism. It is banter, slagging...something we Irish are masters at and not something (in my experience) that is indulged in as much in England. The fact that England doesnt get why we enjoy their discomfort just makes it all the funnier to our perhaps warped sense of humour!Long live this rivalry and this cultural difference. I am married to a Brit and I believe (unlike you, I think) that there are in fact HUGE cultural differences between the two countries. And communication and how we do that is one of them. My husband has experienced (only twice) racism and it is something quite different. Banter and slagging is just .... well its the craic! Racism is not! And yep, I cheered and crowed loud about our Cricket team... but yeah, I'll also be hoping for an invitation to a garden party with The Queen too!But you have stirred up a great chat!

Great article Dave. And that was someone from the North who'd had a few too many and who was busy trying to wind everyone up, not just me, so he doesn't count. I've come across plenty of 'banter', both sport-related and non-sport-related, but nothing at all to take offence at. Liked the article though, some very good points made.

As one of those 200,000 English people living in Ireland, I have to say that I can only think of one incident I would label as ‘racist’ or ‘xenophobic’ in my 8 years of living here. What I've seen has been for the most part pure joy at a wonderful sporting spectacle and delight in having beaten the best at their own sport. In all sporting events where these two countries meet there's been some of this - yes xenophobia and its very distasteful granted, but it is in the minority.I've spent the last day incredibly angry over some tweets about Irish reactions of ' jingoistic blarney assailing mine eyes over the Ireland cricket win is typically lacking in both grace and a sense of proportion' and ' live up to their most unappealing national stereotype'. In many ways articles like this do true fans of Irish sport a huge injustice by tarring everyone with the same brush. Unfair and inaccurate.

Interesting article, Dave. I don’t agree with some of it though. I have an English son as it happens and I spent 5 of the happiest years of my life living in London, a city I consider to be my second home. However, I would have to take issue with you about the standing and longevity of cricket in Ireland. I've loved the game ever since I was a little girl when, knee high to a grasshopper (mixing my metaphorical insects perhaps) I watched it with my Dad. It is a wonderful, exciting and compelling sport. I have been to see the carnival that is test cricket - England versus New Zealand, at the Oval - and enjoyed many lazy days on the village green or in the grounds of Trinity College relaxing to the soundtrack of the thwack of the ball. I have even had a letter published in the Irish Times bemoaning the poor Irish media coverage of the last World Cup in 2007 when Ireland beat Pakistan and progressed to the Super 8.The history of cricket in Ireland is a long one. As with almost every country in which the game is played the English brought cricket to Ireland so we have them to thank for this victory. The game was introduced to the Garrison towns of Kilkenny and Ballinasloe in the early 1800's and spread nationwide in the 1830's. Many clubs still in existence today were founded at this time. At one stage it was overwhelmingly the most popular game in Ireland. In fact Michael Cusack, founder of the GAA, was a devotee and claimed that it was the dream of every Irish boy to hit a 6 for his parish. The first Irish National team took the field in 1855 long before any Test Match was ever played. The match was Ireland -v- The Gentlemen of England in Dublin. Ireland won by 107 runs. The spread of cricket continued until the early 1880's. In 1904 the South Africans were beaten in Cork. An Annual match with Scotland began in 1909 and has been played ever since. In the inter-war years the Test playing countries began to visit Ireland starting with West Indies in 1928. Charles Stewart Parnell was a very keen cricketer and captain of the Wicklow county team.Cricket is an all island game and unites us north & south. It matters. Winning matters and we should be delighted with our win and support our team all the way. We should celebrate their great achievement on the field and enjoy the friendly rivalry. I'm thrilled to see such an upsurge of interest in cricket and hope that everyone buys a ticket to see Ireland play England in Clontarf in August (I have). Yes lay off the jingoism & celebrate the positivity but do please celebrate - we certainly need a celebration.

Great colorful writing as ever Dave and I hate the xenophobia too. It really annoys me when we get these self-righteous, opinionated, skinny latte supping p***ks who don't understand sporting rivalries disregarding something they don't understand as "racist" and living in the past. The other thing you don't get Mr Kenny is that, for all the reasons you outlined above, it shows just how mature a people we really are! We can embrace lots of parts of English culture while maintaining an intense sporting rivalry. Sport has a very "leveling" effect in that it's 15 men against 15 men so it is a test of individual skill. I'm a hurling fan from Kilkenny - not at all a cricket man. When you consider the tiny numbers who play cricket here are able to beat England who have a massive heritage in the sport with a much bigger population of players to pick from you will realise it is a massive achievement! As a GAA man I applaud the team and they deserve ALL the plaudits being heaped on them!!

You just don’t “get” sport at all do you? Hence a big part of the reason for the huge (fleeting) coverage of what you term a 'West Brit' sport.
When was the last time you saw a positive headline, i.e. Ireland succeeded/won/triumphed/have had a good result/are not completely screwed, in a newspaper?
And I would go further than 'cousins' and say our relationship with the English has long been one more similar to that of siblings who went to different schools. You are correct to point out our similarities and indeed our cultures are so intertwined as to be inseparable, in many cases.
But go to countries such as France, Germany, Holland and speak to a huge number of people who *genuinely* hate the English. Ever been mistaken for English abroad? Notice the change in manner when you say you're Irish? While undoubtedly there are some here who do hate the English, your line 'they can be annoying' undercuts your piece slightly. Is this not a xenophobic, ill-advised statement, particularly in the context of this piece? A casual dismissal of an entire nation? Should we take it as lightly as you should take the media coverage of the cricket win?
Yes we should. The media coverage I saw was more done in the spirit of ribbing than xenophobia. I didn't see any fear or hatred or bigotry, just a celebration of an underdog team beating an outright favourite, which in this case happens to be a country with whom Ireland have long had a rivalry. There was no 'hypocrisy'. No 'xenophobia'. Possibly a smattering of 'immaturity'.
Racism is a hefty word, mild or not. I wouldn't bandy it about quite as lightly as you have here.
We are acutely aware of how closely linked we are, how intertwined our nations, businesses, footballers and much more are. It's like kicking your brother up the arse after beating him in a video game.
We don't hate the English, we're not prejudiced against them, we don't despise them or wish them harm. We just like beating them and giving them stick - in this case the stick being a bat.

The media coverage, which was over pretty much as soon as it began, was a case of seizing briefly but with fervour on something at which Ireland has actually done well for once – in this case beating a major sporting team in a tournament watched by millions, albeit not much around these parts.<br

You make some valid points, however, I do think we, Irish society, spend a lot of time worrying about what we think about foreigners/immigrants/the English/the price of cabbage. Well, some of us, at least.Personally, my reaction (and the reaction to many of many international colleagues here in Amsterdam) was "what, Ireland has a cricket team?"The fiends over on blather.net took it further:"Following their historic victory over England in the Cricket World Cup, the entire Irish nation is this afternoon finally waking up to scenes of wanton carnage and drunken devastation following forty eight hours of unprecedented national celebrations. In what is being hailed as 'The Final Victory Against the Sassanach' (from Old Irish: meaning 'West Kraut'), many citizens are calling on the authorities to declare a national holiday in honour of 'Our Brave Fenian Boys' who snapped victory from the jaws of defeat whilst simultaneously ending 800 Years of English Obsession (TM)."

I'm sure if England had won, they would have celebrated and took the piss out of us too. We're a small country with no much going for us at the moment in financial terms so we are allowed to rejoice when we actually achieve something. I'm not a cricket fan but i'm a proud irishman and i salute the irish cricket team just like i would any other other irish sporting team. It was a great win for a small nation and the fact that we beat the old enemy just makes it that much more sweeter.

I agree with Dermot. Does anyone remember abuse of human and civil rights in the North? Or have we all forgotten? England will always be our sporting rivals. Simple as that. Sorry if their oppression is behind our reasons for it, but isn't that the nature of colonialism? some hostility towards the people who killed our neighbours and ancestors? As recently as the 1990's.

Ah but to be fair to us, it’s not like it was all hundreds of years ago that this happened. Did you actually get paid for writing this "article". It's not often we get the chance to rip the piss out of the "old enemy" so why not make hay while the sun shines. Our brit friends and colleagues are well able to take it sure isn't the "old enemy" to England, the rest of the world and they (the brits) have had centuries of piss ripping practice. Any way, as a sporting achievement, it was second to none so well done Ireland and nah nah ni nah nah to England.

Geeziz mr. Kenny relax take a chill pill.
